Karen Kraemer is being recognized for her commitment to improve the teaching of science. Kraemer graduated from UMN Morris in 1971 with a degree in biology and earned a master of science in education from Bemidji State University in 1995. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Kraemer taught biology, chemistry, 7th grade life science, and environmental science classes in several districts before joining the faculty at the Willmar Senior High School. She retired in 2009, but continued as a substitute teacher for the next 14 years.
Throughout her long teaching career, Kraemer served on committees to establish standards of excellence and teaching licensure and was active with the Minnesota Science Teachers Association. In 1999, she received the Minnesota Outstanding Biology Teacher Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers.
Outside of the classroom, Kraemer has been active in sustainability efforts. She has organized community events such as the Healthy Earth Healthy Kids initiative, in collaboration with several Willmar area community groups, advocating for climate action and healthy environment. She has also completed training to become a Blessed Tomorrow Ambassador in 2023, where she inspires climate action through customizable presentations and resources.
Kraemer has also stepped into leadership on the board of directors for the League of Women Voters Minnesota and as president of The Willmar Area League, to broaden her advocacy for climate, immigration, and voter rights.
Kraemer and her husband, Roy, a member of the UMN Morris class of 1969, have been married 55 years and have four children.
