Mark Koehn ’80, originally from Edgerton, Minnesota, enrolled at UMN Morris in 1975, graduating in 1980 with majors in biology, philosophy, and psychology, and a minor in chemistry. He was a member of the men’s track team throughout his time at UMN Morris.

Koehn attended the University of Iowa from 1980 to 1987, leaving with a master’s (1982) and a PhD (1987) in philosophy. He received his JD from Stanford University in 1990.

After practicing law in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, Koehn and his family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where he practiced law and served as director of two local paralegal studies programs. He retired from teaching in 2017 but continues to practice law. He also edits a small Twin Cities poetry journal from his home in the Black Hills.

Mark has been married to his law school classmate, Alicia Garcia, for more than thirty years. Alicia has been both a practicing attorney and a Rapid City news anchor throughout the family’s time in South Dakota. Mark and Alicia have four grown children and twin three-year-old grandchildren just five minutes away, who call or visit Papa and Gigi daily.
